Eddy current-based material loss imaging system prototype

چکیده
Systems that associate positions with eddy current probe readings present inspection data more directly and usefully than the more common impedance plane display. We have economically constructed such an integration of an eddy current testing device with a position feedback device which gives 0.005” achievable resolution. The position and probe readings are fed to a PC and plotted in real-time as a projection into a user-defined rectangle in 3-space. All spatial coordinates and all inspection data are retained for model building and record keeping. Unsampled eddy-current readings are interpolated using a spatial average, consistent with the observed averaging effect of the probe. An empirically-determined convolution kernel permits an estimate of the surface profile on the opposite side of the sample by deconvolution. This can then be combined with the position to provide a model of the sampled area.

Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is a promising modality for noninvasive imaging due to its contactless technology. Being a non-contact safe imaging technique, MIT has been an appropriate method in compare to other electrical tomography. In this imaging method, a primary magnetic field is applied by excitation coils to induce eddy currents in the material to be studied and a secondary magnet...

متن کاملQuantitative Imaging of Corrosion in Plates by Eddy Current Methods
We consider the problem of determining material loss due to corrosion in a plate. Eddy current data are collected on one side of the plate with corrosion damage occurring on the opposite side. Our work is based on linearizing the relationship between eddy current loop impedance change with the loss profile. In this context, we show that eddy current data are sufficient to uniquely determine the...

In this paper, a non-destructive eddy current test system was designed to evaluate the surface hardness of the carbonitrided steel parts. For this purpose, various samples of the tappet were used after the surface hardening and grinding operations as control samples and, if necessary, were subjected to destructive and non-destructive tests. Microstructural studies were performed with a microsco...

Detection and characterization of the material loss due to corrosion in aircraft fuselage joints plays an important role in life management of aging aircraft. Pulsed eddy current has been shown to effectively characterize hidden corrosion in lap splices. However, variation of the probe lift-off and interlayer gap can cause false indications or inaccuracy in quantification. This paper presents t...
